Time for a picture book. These are my favourite photographs from Laos - a magical country of narrow river valleys, mountainous outcrops and spectacular rocky grottos. Enough said, here are the pics.

Just over the border from Vietnam is the beautiful north-eastern village of Muang Khua. Lining the main road and crossing a confluence of the Nam Ou river, it was a sleepy town where life flowed at a simpler pace. A predictable title for this post but that’s how it felt waking up there. Having spent a weekend in Hong Kong it was time to get back to travelling. My adventures began in Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon as it was in days gone by.

Here are my day-by-day adventures from the South to the North.

Tuesday 31st January

Having spent the past 6 weeks moving swiftly, I was desperate to chill out and catch some privacy: it was time to book myself into a proper hotel. The day was spent running errands and moving from my hostel to my new slice of moderate luxury – after all, I was still on a backpacker’s budget....

The weekend started in style – a Michelin star restaurant at Hong Kong airport and a serving of some delightful barbeque pork ribs – Ho Hung Kee’s was an unexpected treat. My friend from home, Ben, greeted me straight out of arrivals and bought me over to his colleagues from Marlborough College Malaysia for a quick bite. We were there to welcome in the Lunar New Year.
